The Commissioners passed a resolution that will allow any money donated to the shelter to be devoted to helping the animals, instead of essentially flowing back into the general fund. That means people can donate to help build a fence or for medical help for the animals there.
In addition, the county is putting aside $5,000 for medical treatement of the animals. This is GREAT news!
Read more about it in the Detroit Free Press.
Sadley, the commissioners would not even discuss having an Animal Welfare Commission. We believe the commission would be necessary to accomplish the mission of a No Kill Shelter since the current staffing doesn't have the time or experience needed to address it.
Animal Shelter issues are addressed in the health services committee meeting, here is more information about the meetings:

Exciting changes are ahead for the Macomb County! Thanks to the Macomb County Commissioners, Macomb County Animal Shelter is dedicating its efforts to making Macomb County a no kill facility. We are not there yet, lots of work and planning needs to be done, but we are confident that our Commissioners, Health Department and Animal Control can get the job done!
The shelter is now on Petfinder! This is awesome news and a giant step forward for the shelter. Great job to all those involved, including the shelter and the IT department.

An Advisory Committe, consisting of Macomb County rescues and the Oakland County Pet Fund, has been formed to give the shelter feedback on how to improve. We think is a giant step forward and look forward to working with the Director and her staff.
Thanks to the Animal Control Director, Health Department Director and the Macomb County Commissioners. A special thank you to Carey Torrice for bringing attention to the shelter and devoting her time. Please click here to find out more about her.
