Why spay/neuter?

  • Each year in Michigan 118,000 dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters.  If we put a cat or a dog in each seat at the Palace of Auburn Hills, we would fill the Palace 5.3 times with the number of dogs and cats euthanized annually.
  • Each day in Michigan 95 dogs are adopted while 120 are euthanized
  • Each day in Michigan 90 cats are adopted while 202 are euthanized
  • Today 320 dogs and cats will be euthanized in Michigan shelters
  • Spaying a cat can reduce her chance of getting mammary cancer by 90%.  It also helps prevent uterine infections.  Breast cancer, can be fatal in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats.
  • Neutering male cats and dogs prevents testicular cancer, if done before six months of age.
  • Early age spaying/neutering has been practiced in North America for over 25 years.  Early age means between 6 and 14 weeks.  A recent study at the University of Florida found no significant differences in the physical and behavioral characteristics of dogs and cats spayed/neutered at 7 weeks compared to those at 7 months.
  • Cats and Dogs can become pregnant as young as 5 months old.  The average litter for a cat is 4 but can be as high as 8.  The average litter for a dog is 6.
  • Thirty years ago, 10% of cats and dogs living in the United States were spayed or neutered; today, that number is over 60%. As spay/neuter rates have increased, the shelter death toll has steadily dropped. In 1970, more than 20 million cats and dogs were euthanized; today, that number is under 4 million.
  • Spay/Neuter your cat or dog as soon as possible - 8 week and 2 lbs. – but most importantly SPAY/NEUTER!
